Oak Cottage, Somerleyton

Sector

Residential

The village of Somerleyton is located close to the banks of the River Waveney and has a high proportion of its building stock is made up of sophisticated architect-designed dwellings. These were built by the Peto and Crossley families of Somerleyton Hall or by the Lucas brothers, owners of the local Brickworks and have been well preserved.

The proposed re-built infill extension is maintained within the existing footprint drawing inspiration from the original house and wider conservation area. Picking up on the black glazed pantiled roof, the infill extensions dark stained timber cladding complements and creates continuity between the two distinguished Georgian Houses. The design also includes exposed rafter tails and timber detailing at the eaves, echoing the exposed timbering and decorative bargeboards featured within the conservation area. Inside the house has been re-modlelled to create a tanquil retreat.
