The site is located south-west of the ancient market town of Hadleigh, within open farmland. An existing barn reflects a utilitarian character, constructed using a steel portal frame with fibre cement corrugated sheeting to the upper levels, matching the roof. The proposed design retains and reinterprets this industrial aesthetic, incorporating contemporary elements that complement the original structure. This terrace is contained within the original barn footprint and features perforated rainscreen cladding, creating effects of light and shadow on painted brickwork walls. This sheltered outdoor space provides an area for relaxation while maintaining the barn’s agricultural character.
The south elevation retains the use of large sliding glazed doors, to facilitate a uninterrupted connection between internal and external spaces, with level thresholds ensuring sufficient accessibility. To mitigate overheating the cladding has been extruded to form an overhang, delivering effective solar shading to the south-facing façade. The industrial character of the barn is further
articulated through the use of powder-coated metal sinusoidal roof cladding, with rainwater goods
discreetly hidden behind perforated rainscreen cladding, adding depth and layering to each elevation
